2019 Kia Niro

2019 Kia Niro

The 2019 Kia Niro is the epitome of simplicity. There is no room for pretense with this vehicle. It does it what it is meant to do and boy, does it do a good job. Now, the Niro is Kia’s dedicated electric vehicle. So, there’s no such thing as a Niro without an electric model. All trims and variants come with a battery-powered electric motor attached to the standard internal combustion engine. There are primarily two versions of the Niro. You have the hybrid and the plug-in hybrid.

The trim levels are more or less the same. The Hybrid comes in FE, LX, EX, S Touring, and Touring, while the plug-in comes as an LX. EX, or EX Premium. Despite the varying levels, the engine remains the same – a 1.6-liter inline-4. However, they’re each teamed with slightly different batteries to power their electric motors. Even so, the overall output is the same – around 139 horsepower. The hybrid gets a 1.56-kWh hybrid battery that delivers a fuel economy of 40mpg combined. The plug-in version gets an 8.9-kWh battery that offers a fuel economy of 46mpg. The plug-in charge in about less than 3 hours with a level 2 home charger.

Safety wise, both Niro variants perform tremendously well. The IIHS has positioned the 2019 Niro as a Top Safety Pick. The vehicle has managed to score really well across all categories. This includes both front- and passenger-side small overlap crashes. The optional emergency braking system has been described as “superior” by the IIHS in terms of forwarding crash mitigation. This system comes as standard on the higher trim levels, but can be added for a price on the lower trims. On the whole, the 2019 Kia Niro is a great buy within the compact hybrid segment. Probably one of Kia's best offerings so far. Interested in knowing more about the 2019 Kia Niro? Well, come on over to University Kia and get a free demonstration.
